Numerous historic sights and interesting towns of the Lake Constance region lie around the Adler in Salem-Beuren. From Salem Monastery and Palace right on our doorstep, via Birnau Basilica, to the historic old towns of Meersburg, Überlingen and Ravensburg, there is much to discover. The region is also rewarding for culture lovers: museums, UNESCO World Heritage sites, castles and historic buildings make the surroundings a varied destination.

Salem Monastery and Palace

Salem Monastery & Palace

History & culture · 3 km · approx. 5–10 min

Salem Monastery and Palace are among the most important historic sights around Salem and lie only a few minutes from the Adler. The former Cistercian abbey combines medieval monastic history with a magnificent baroque palace complex and extensive grounds. A visit can be wonderfully combined with a walk or a bike ride through the Salem valley.

Meersburg

Historic town & lake · 11 km · approx. 20 min

Meersburg is one of the most beautiful historic towns on Lake Constance. The medieval castle, the New Palace, winding lanes, vineyards and the location right on the lake make the town a varied destination for an outing. A walk through the old town down to the lakeside promenade is particularly lovely, before heading back uphill with a view of Lake Constance.

Überlingen

Historic town & lake · 13 km · approx. 20 min

Überlingen combines a historic old town and an extensive landscape of parks and gardens with its location right on Lake Constance. The town garden, the lakeside promenade and the historic centre invite you to stroll at leisure. Thanks to its proximity to the Adler, Überlingen is suitable both for a spontaneous half-day outing and as a starting point for further activities around the western part of the lake.

Unteruhldingen Lake Dwellings

History & UNESCO World Heritage · 8 km · approx. 20 min

The Unteruhldingen Lake Dwellings are among the special historic sights on Lake Constance. The open-air archaeological museum shows reconstructed houses from the Stone and Bronze Ages and vividly conveys how people lived on Lake Constance several thousand years ago. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps”, the lake dwellings are an exciting destination for families, history buffs and culture lovers.

Birnau Basilica

Birnau Basilica is one of the best-known baroque sights on Lake Constance. The magnificent pilgrimage church stands above the Überlinger See and offers an impressive view over the Lake Constance landscape. A visit can be combined particularly well with a bike ride from Beuren along the Prälatenweg – one of our personal recommendations.

Ravensburg

Historic town · 31 km · approx. 35 min

Ravensburg is a historic town with a particularly well-preserved old town and numerous towers and gates. Strolling through the centre you encounter the history of the former imperial city at every turn. Cafés, shops and museums make Ravensburg a varied destination for a wander through town. For families, a visit can also be combined well with the Ravensburger Spieleland.

Konstanz

Konstanz is the largest town on Lake Constance and looks back on a long history. The historic old town with its cathedral, the harbour and the location right on the lake make the town a varied day trip. Those with a little more time can combine a visit to Konstanz with Mainau Island or Reichenau Island.

Reichenau Island

UNESCO World Heritage & history · 31 km + ferry · approx. 55 min

Reichenau Island is known above all for its centuries-old monastic history and its important churches. The monastery island has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000. At the same time, Reichenau offers a special cultural landscape with vegetable growing, lakeside paths and beautiful views over Lake Constance. A rewarding destination for anyone who wants to combine history, culture and nature.

The historic island town of Lindau is one of the special towns on the Bavarian shore of Lake Constance. The harbour with its lighthouse and lion statue, the old town and the many historic buildings make the island a varied destination. A walk through Lindau combines history, Lake Constance panorama and the special flair of a town set in the middle of the lake.

The impressive ruins of Hohentwiel fortress sit on a striking volcanic hill above Singen. From the historic site there are wide views over the Hegau and, in clear weather, as far as Lake Constance and the Alps. For us the Hohentwiel is a special insider tip for guests looking for an interesting outing away from the classic Lake Constance destinations.

Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen

One of the natural wonders of the wider Lake Constance region. Across a width of around 150 metres, enormous masses of water plunge over the rocks. The natural spectacle is particularly impressive from a boat. The Rhine Falls are a little further from the Adler, but for a longer stay on Lake Constance they are a rewarding day-trip destination.

Nature & Activity

Around the Adler in Salem-Beuren, nature begins practically on the doorstep. The Salem valley and the Linzgau offer ideal conditions for hikes, bike rides and varied leisure activities. From quiet paths through the countryside to special experiences such as archery or swingolf, there is something for every interest.

Salem Valley & Linzgau

Nature & hiking · right at the Adler

The Salem valley and the Linzgau are characterised by meadows, forests, orchards and gentle hills. Around Beuren there are numerous paths suitable for walks, hikes and bike rides. Anyone wanting to experience the Lake Constance region away from the well-known tourist spots will find a quiet and varied cultural landscape right on our doorstep.

The ridge trail around Heiligenberg is our personal tip for a walk with far-reaching views. The route leads through the varied landscape of the Linzgau and offers lovely views over the region again and again. Thanks to its elevated position and quiet surroundings, the trail is particularly suited to guests who want to take a relaxed stroll after an eventful day.

Prälatenweg from Beuren to Birnau Basilica

Bike ride & nature · starts right at the Adler

For those who like to explore the region by bike, we recommend the Prälatenweg from Beuren to Birnau Basilica. The route combines the Linzgau landscape with a cultural highlight and finally leads to one of the best-known viewpoints on the Überlinger See. An ideal combination of exercise, scenery and Lake Constance experience.

Schlosssee Salem

The Schlosssee near Salem offers an uncomplicated way to spend time outdoors. The surroundings are suitable for a walk and a relaxed break by the water. Thanks to the short distance, the Schlosssee is also a good destination for a little outing in between – for example after a visit to Salem Palace.

Lellwangen archery course

The Lellwangen archery course combines intuitive archery with an experience in the open countryside. The 3D course leads through the terrain and offers various targets for beginners and experienced archers. Anyone wanting to try the sport for the first time can start on site with hired equipment and an introduction.

Lake Constance Swingolf in the Deggenhausertal

Swingolf is an uncomplicated variant of golf and is also suitable for people without prior experience. In the Deggenhausertal a spacious course awaits you in the middle of the countryside, with views towards Lake Constance and the Alps. A good choice for families, friends and groups who want to be active together and try something new.

Gehrenberg tower near Markdorf

The Gehrenberg tower offers a wide view over the Linzgau, Lake Constance and, in clear weather, as far as the Alps. Our special tip: plan your visit for the late afternoon and stay until sunset. The view makes the tower a rewarding destination for anyone who enjoys seeing the landscape from a different perspective.

Adventure golf at Seepark Pfullendorf combines exercise with playful fun. The course is suitable for families, friends and groups and can be combined well with more time in the Seepark. Anyone looking for an uncomplicated activity for an afternoon will find a varied alternative to classic golf here.

Karren, Dornbirn

The Karren is Dornbirn’s local mountain and opens up an impressive view over the Rhine valley, the surrounding mountains and, in suitable weather, as far as Lake Constance. The Karren cable car takes you comfortably to the summit. Because of the distance, the Karren is better suited to a day trip – especially for guests who want to combine their stay with a detour to Vorarlberg.

Säntis

Mountains & panorama · 80 km + ferry · approx. 2 h 10 min

At 2,502 metres the Säntis is the highest mountain in the Alpstein and offers an extraordinary panorama over the Alps, Lake Constance and the Alpine foothills. The cable car takes visitors comfortably to the summit. Sufficient time should be allowed for this outing. Especially during a stay of several days, the Säntis is a rewarding destination for a special day trip.

Family & Experiences

Whether animals, technology, a theme park or exciting museums: around Salem and Lake Constance there are numerous possibilities for families and shared experiences. Many destinations are easy to reach and suitable for half a day or a whole day. There are also interesting alternatives in changeable weather.

The Affenberg Salem is one of the best-known attractions in our immediate surroundings. On a circular path you can watch Barbary macaques in a near-natural environment. There is also a large stork colony and other animals. Thanks to the short distance from the Adler, a visit can be combined well with Salem Palace or other destinations in the Salem valley.

Reutemühle pet farm

The Reutemühle pet farm near Überlingen gives children and adults the chance to experience numerous domestic and farm animals up close. The extensive grounds lie in a natural setting and invite you to take your time and discover the different animals. Especially for families with younger children, the farm is an easy tip for a stay in the region.

Auto & Tractor Museum Lake Constance

The AUTO & TRACTOR MUSEUM Lake Constance in Uhldingen-Mühlhofen shows around 350 vehicles and numerous other exhibits from technology, agriculture and everyday history. The exhibition combines historic vehicles with insights into life in past decades. Our tip for rainy days: the museum is a good way to spend a varied day even in bad weather.

Mainau Island

Mainau Island is one of the best-known destinations on Lake Constance and delights with extensive gardens, seasonal blooms and varied areas for visitors of all ages. Besides the gardens, families will also find play and adventure offers. It is worth allowing plenty of time for the visit and exploring the island without haste.

The Ravensburger Spieleland is our personal tip for families with children. Numerous attractions, themed worlds and hands-on activities invite you to play, discover and try things out. The park is aimed particularly at families with younger children and is ideal for a whole holiday day.

Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen

The Dornier Museum at Friedrichshafen airport tells the story of aviation and space travel through numerous original aircraft, space objects and interactive exhibition areas. Technology-minded children and adults can discover together how aviation has developed over the decades. An interesting destination when the weather on Lake Constance is not playing along.

Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen

Right on Friedrichshafen harbour, the Zeppelin Museum is dedicated to the history of airship travel and combines technology, history and art. The exhibition includes parts of the famous “Hindenburg” zeppelin and traces the development of airship travel. An exciting museum for anyone interested in technology and a good alternative in bad weather.

The Allensbach wildlife and leisure park on the Bodanrück combines animal watching with a variety of leisure activities. Its location on the Bodanrück also makes the park a good starting point for further activities on the western part of Lake Constance.

Wellness & Relaxation

After an active day in the Lake Constance region, a relaxing break is just the thing. Around Salem there are various options – from thermal water and sauna landscapes to wellness offers right on Lake Constance. Especially convenient: two well-known thermal baths in Überlingen and Meersburg are quickly reached from the Adler.

The MeersburgTherme combines thermal water, wellness and a spacious sauna landscape with its special location above Lake Constance. Our tip for a lovely walk: the ridge trail in Heiligenberg

If you enjoy being out on foot, we recommend the ridge trail around Heiligenberg. The paths lead through the varied landscape of the Linzgau and offer lovely views again and again. The quiet atmosphere is particularly pleasant – ideal for a walk where you can simply switch off.

Our favourite bike ride: from Beuren to Birnau

Starts right at the Adler

One of our favourite bike rides starts right in Beuren and follows the Prälatenweg to Birnau Basilica. The route combines the quiet landscape around Salem with a magnificent view over the Überlinger See. Anyone who enjoys cycling can combine exercise, nature and a special Lake Constance destination here.

Our tip for a quiet spot on Lake Constance: Rebmannshof

12 km · approx. 20 min

If you would like to experience Lake Constance away from the well-known promenades, we recommend the Rebmannshof. Here you can enjoy the landscape in a quiet atmosphere – perfect for anyone who wants to escape the bustle a little. A lovely place to take your time and simply let Lake Constance work its magic.

Our tip for the sunset: Gehrenberg tower

10 km · approx. 15 min

For a special sunset we recommend the Gehrenberg tower near Markdorf. From here the view stretches far over the Linzgau to Lake Constance and, in clear weather, to the Alps. Our tip: plan your visit so that you are at the top in good time before sunset – then you can watch the landscape change in the evening light.

Our bad-weather tip: AUTO & TRACTOR MUSEUM

Even on a rainy day there is much to discover around Salem. Our tip for bad weather is the AUTO & TRACTOR MUSEUM in Uhldingen-Mühlhofen. The large collection of historic vehicles and the insights into the lives of past generations make the visit interesting for adults and children alike.

Our family tip: Ravensburger Spieleland

For families with children we recommend the Ravensburger Spieleland. The numerous attractions and themed worlds invite you to play, discover and join in. It is best to allow a whole day for the visit. Especially with younger children, the Spieleland is a lovely way to spend a varied holiday day.

Our insider tip for the off-season: Sigmaringen Castle

43 km · approx. 45 min

Anyone visiting Lake Constance in spring, autumn or winter should consider a trip to Sigmaringen. The impressive Hohenzollern castle towers above the Danube and offers a fascinating insight into the history of the region. Especially outside the high season, Sigmaringen Castle is for us a rewarding destination away from the classic Lake Constance outings.
